Alder Hey in Liverpool is the busiest children's hospital in Europe. Since 1914 we have led the way in the care of sick children and we now treat more than 250,000 young patients every year. The hospital is the birthplace of modern paediatric anaesthesia; neonatal surgery and children's cardiac surgery were pioneered in the 1940's and 1950's. The hospital is one of the few with a University Institute of Child Health. There are 20 specialist services, which include bone marrow transplant, burns, cleft lip and palate, cancer, renal replacement and spinal injuries. The supra-regional services include cardiology and craniofacial surgery. More information about Alder Hey can be found at www.alderhey.nhs.uk Alder Hey Children's Health Park will be an exciting place to be - inviting, warm, happy, calming, educational, essentially a home-from-home in which children will be cared for. It will have spacious wards where our young patients will enjoy privacy and dignity with plenty of space to accommodate parents. We'll have vastly improved clinic areas, education and research facilities, new operating theatres and a new A & E. All our critical areas will be close to each other in a cluster of units. Our plan is to build the new Alder Hey in two phases. The first phase, creating almost 85% of the clinical space we need, will be built on part of Springfield Park. It will include: A&E, Intensive Care, Radiology, Operating theatres, New In Patient Days, Day surgery unit, multi-storey car park, landscaping and the creation of new parkland. Phase 2 will provide new Out Patient Unit and allied health services, pharmacy, education and research facilities and the completion of the hospital gardens. The aim is to start work on Phase 2 before Phase 1 is finished.
