The Hospital

Alder Hey in Liverpool is the busiest children's hospital in Europe. Since 1914 we have led the way in the care of sick children and we now treat more than 250,000 young patients every year. The hospital is the birthplace of modern paediatric anaesthesia; neonatal surgery and children's cardiac surgery were pioneered in the 1940's and 1950's.

The hospital is one of the few with a University Institute of Child Health. There are 20 specialist services, which include bone marrow transplant, burns, cleft lip and palate, cancer, renal replacement and spinal injuries. The supra-regional services include cardiology and craniofacial surgery.

More information about Alder Hey can be found at www.alderhey.nhs.uk

The New Greenspot

We now have a new addition to our Yellow Brick Road at the Alder Road entrance. The Greenspot located in the hospital grounds is part of Delivering a Green 08 as part of Liverpool receiving Capital of Culture status.

It is an interactive installation that is solar powered producing light and sound that power up at dusk. It also features interesting quotes from famous tree lovers.

Thanks to the partnership of the Forestery Commission, NWDA (Newlands), Mersey Forest, Regional Parks Xchange, Groundwork Merseyside and Environment Agency for bringing the exhibition to Alder Hey.

Full Steam Ahead

Liverpool City Council's Planning Committee has given unanimous support to our proposal to build our new hospital on Springfield Park. Achieving planning permissions signals a major milestone on our journey to build the first children's health park in the UK. Our new Project Director, Richard Glen, is now on board.
